Exploring vintage crafts like, knitting, sewing and crochet! ✨
Hello! I'm Claude a costume maker, sewing teacher and dress historian making my own vintage wardrobe. I share tutorials to help you learn new sewing skills and share making logs of my projects so that you can see how those skills work in context.
I love sharing my sewing adventures with you all; whatever they may be. I love to experiment and try new things so I'll be sure to share all of that with you too.
My personal style is usually around about the middle of the 20th century. The 1940s is probably my favourite era to wear but I love to sew styles from all decades. My master's degree in Victorian studies has given me a passion for historical costume and I am looking forward to many 19th century outfits to come.
So welcome! I hope you will find something here to inspire your own creative journey and I look forward to sharing my work with you.

A VERY real month of Stashbusting | Spring 2024
It's been a tough few months on the knitting front. I won't lie things have been getting to me. I wasn't even sure I was going to upload this episode but here we are. As a result it's a long one. I know I said I called it a month but it ended up being more like 2.5 months 😅
So if you're interested in some very real knitting content where I don't really make anything and have a crisis in the middle of it..... This one's for you!

The 1940s System I'm Using to TRANSFORM my Wardrobe
Просмотров 56 тыс.28 дней назад
I'm starting a new challenge! Using the 1941 Clothing Rationing Scheme I'm going to be limiting my purchases of new goods in an attempt to be more sustainable. My hope is that this will make me more conscious of what I buy and when, what is working for me in my wardrobe and what I need to do to make it work better for me, and hopefully it'll inspire me to get more creative with what I already h...

Totally agree with quitting. I never thought about it like that. I have had a few things that got a negative emotion attached to it, and I never did wear it or use it. The investment fallacy is what got me. I'd already put in so much time thinking about it, getting everything I needed to do it, etc., etc. I really kind of liked your response. It kind of took a load of me, too.
I am so encouraged by all the ducks 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆 in your thread. What a great viewership you must have!! ❤❤ well said.
Sew in ribbons to make it a corset back. Too much work to go to waste, it’s not that it’s ugly it just doesn’t fit well.
I, too, appreciate your honesty and forthcomingness. Thank you for sharing your journey with us😀💚🌻👍❤
omg i feel like even if the pattern writer meant s1 (s one) they should know that almost every other pattern is sl (SL) for slip stitches and specify that they mean the number not the letter L? what an odd thing to do..
Chronic illness/disability really feels like a comedy of errors sometimes, gosh. All the "but I can't do [x] because of [y]" and the "but *this* caused *that* to happen" etc etc. I totally feel you about feeling "stupid". It can be really scary for me actually to realise that I'm not able to comprehend the situation, especially when it involves talking to other people for some reason. I find it very frustrating when I'm struggling with something in the moment that I used to be able to do or I know I usually can do (since my cognitive stuff varies). As always, thanks for sharing these moments with us. Helps us know we're not alone <3
Well, I was watching this immediately after messing up the top of the mitten I just started and having to start over, so I'm pretty sure this is a universal experience... Incidentally, I'm also pretty dyslexic, but I also have an audio processing disorder that messes with the screen reader adaptation. I don't know if this helps anyone else, but something I've been doing when I have to sort out something my brain can't handle on its own is to color in the different key components of the text. What counts as a component depends on context, but I can ping pong through coloring things out of order if that's what happens, and then the color cues help my brain unscramble it later. Works best on paper, but still helpful on a screen. I hope that made sense! Just as an example: S3 would be split into two colors, with all Slip notes being the same color throughout (and all numbers being the same color). As another: for coordinates, (dd mm ss) would be split into three different colors, one for each unit
I agree. You shouldnt force a pattern when you it ia only stressing you.
Wolly math, bit like chicken math but warmer, lol. Love the new colours. ❤
I'm thinking with your experience reading vague patterns and just making sense of it, your own designs might be more clear. Guess we'll see when we see!
I think a if nothing else a larger person would like it, it's very pretty and gof knows finding things in larger sizes that are cute like that is so dang rarw
Hi Claudia, hope you’re well! The new version of the Over It Slipover pattern with typos amended will be updated on Ravelry this week. I apologise for misinterpreting your second email - I hadn’t realised there was anything to reply to as I’d already mentioned changing the pattern. Have refunded your copy. Have a great week 😊
Thanks very much that's very kind of you and totally unexpected. Thanks for clearing up my confusion even if I didn't end up making the pattern 😊
I am in the same boat having trouble interpreting patterns. Not dyslexic but I have a hard time with abbreviations and with patterns that assume you understand what's going on. I usually end up fully writing out the pattern in wording that makes sense to me, with lots of explanations. Kind of a pain, but I'm less likely to mess up the knitting and get upset that way.
French lavender might be quite pretty with those colors if it’s also got that heathered effect.
I think its a typo omitting the 'l'. Change wrong and right to 'good and bad'. Read the pattern first and imagine it's construction. If you can. Good luck 007. 😂😮❤
I have somewhere around here😅
It's really annoying when you buy a pattern and it doesn't work out (especially if money is tight!) I bought a pattern on Ravelry recently which has excellent reviews and plenty of finished products. Tried to make it and I had to amend multiple sections to get anything like the photos/measurements. Very frustrating!
Because you triying on summer maybe try again in the winter with legins and scarf you will love
One day in the throes of a flare up I attempted to cast on a pattern five whole times before I gave up-your method of prep work is much better!!
🦆
Love those videos so much 😊
"Wrong" and "right" both starts with an R sound. This is Correct for the word Right, and Incorrect for the word Wrong. So if you see it say "WS", you can think "oh, that's incorrect - so it's Wrong!"
I don't want to confuse the issue but without being able to have a good look at the pattern I wonder if the designer meant S1 was to mean slip 1 knitwise as opposed to her sl 3 purlwise. You are obviously fed up with the pattern and don't really care anymore. If that is what she meant it is still very unclear and sloppy as an instruction and should have been included in the list of abbreviations.
Ha. You rock. Thanks!
You could try to put it in the dryer so it fit's better
Perhaps you should start writing out your patterns without abbreviations before knitting. A search and replace tool could help change all the ‘k’s to knit and you could only include the number of stitches for the size you’re using. I often at least highlight the right size for my pattern otherwise I will make constant mistakes. I’m sorry that pattern was so frustrating for you!
It's beautiful. Wear something stretchy and form-fitting underneath, instead of pleated.
I love your stash-busting/ knitting videos so much! I would also love to see you try more crocheting but I get if you don't feel like it so much😄
Put a cute white apron over it.
As someone with dyslexia I really wished pattern designers would take some time to make patterns more accessible for us. It's so annoying spending money on something we don't know will work for us. You weren't being unreasonable at all, we are allowed to get annoyed at the world for not being inclusive.
I'm not sure if it would be helpful, but I thought about the "wrong and right side" issue... and as a German that's confusing me too. So maybe it could be helpful for you to switch it to left and right side? That's how we call "wrong" and "right" side... so "wrong" would be "left". Maybe - on a good day for you - you could kind of switch the words? Just a thought I had and wanted to share. Don't want to be imposing on you, just thought it might be helpful. :) And I so totally get the hate for feeling "stupid" (and I'm putting it in quotation marks because neither me nor you are actually stupid!), because I *know* that I'm intelligent but due to my depression it's hard for me to concentrate and I often just forget about things I literally talked about three minutes ago. So, yeah... don't know if it helps, but you're not alone with this! I feel you so much in that regard! <3
For your pattern reading. You could put your pattern into chatgpt. Then ask it to replace the pattern text with the list of keys and make it understandable as a pattern. Then have it read it back to you 😊
I felt this video in my disabled soul. Currently don't have use of my hands and I start crying whenever I try to knit and it hurts too much. It's so frustrating when you're sick and just want to feel a bit better... But then your body has other ideas 😔❤️
I don't know if it's something you'd be into/up to but I'd be interested in a video (or even a short) about how to make patterns screen reader and/dyslexic friendly Also fwiw I find multi size patterns *incredibly* confusing to read without dyslexia, I have to go through and cross out all the bits I don't need or I can feel my brain smoking from how hard I have to concentrate to make sense of it
I felt sad with you when you experienced your teary moment. Knitting is one of those hobbies where if it goes wrong it goes horribly wrong and takes so much time and effort to fix. Have you thought about using a stitch dictionary (I'm sure you could even find a vintage one!) and using it with a basic vintage shaped garment in order to design your own that uses your stash? I'm sure with your knitting and sewing experience you could quite easily knit to a shape rather than having to follow a pattern. Some of the vintage patterns are quite a simple construction.
Just as an idea about the hexi puffs. Since you have to make 10,000 white ones you might want to start doing one or two every time you change colors for the flowers. Maybe that way it won’t seem like such a slog to get them all done. 😅
I'm so sorry you had to deal with that unclear pattern. The slip stitch abbreviation was clearly wrong and i wish the designer just acknowledged it instead of trying to come up with bad explanation.
I hear you about patterns interfacing with learning differences. I reknit frequently and haven't mastered patterns yet. I have good luck using color to help. I'm a teacher, so forgive the unsolicited advice. If you paste the instructions into a document, you could do batch formating with find/replace or ctrl f and color, bold, etc. Any parts that are annoying- like WS. I think you'd look great in a vest! Good luck.
So glad the dog wasn't in witness protection!
Best thing ever
Just saying, you deserve £80 of yarn ❤
Cute!
I had one of these in the 60s & we made “no shoes” out of them. That’s a loop for your toe attach daisy on top of foot & tie behind ankle.
My mother was born at the beginning of the great depression and I was born in 1949. My mother pretty much made all my clothes (except panties, slips, petticoats, and socks). She made my brother's shirts. Between her and my 2 grandma's, learn to sew, crochet, knit, and embroidery. I not only taught my daughter's but my son's as well. I love to take old clothes and turn them into new and useful things. Right now, l am making so placemats. I had them when I had a rectangle table. Now I have an oval table. The rectangle placemats just don't work or look as well. So, I have cut the old rectangle placemats into an oval. That's my project I have been working on today.
Being frustrated about not being able to go look at yarn colours in person is so relatable
Don't feel bad about the pattern. Pattern writers are just confusing. I also find it confusing when you start a pattern as written and and many rows later you were suppose to do something else along with it. I don't know why some writer don't include it in the beginning notes....
Thanks for a wonderful video Claude. Sorry the knitting has been frustrating lately - I hope you can get into your knitting groove and vibe with some patterns soon. Another commenter mentioned the concept of writing patterns for folks with dyslexia. I'd be down to try and convert a standard pattern into something more accessible if you or others had feedback on what would be helpful. We could change the font, spacing, make it screen reader friendly, use less abbreviations - not really sure what would help most.
I LOVE how you asked the bf for permissions and...I'm sorry but I need more dog content now! Is doggo a vizsla? My fav dog breed is the German Shorthaired Pointer, which has a very similar shape and energy level but different, spotty coat. I can't wait until I get my own place and can have one again :)
Me and my Dyscalculie ('reading' disabled when it comes to numbers and calculus) has always stopped me from reading knitting/crocheting patterns. So I only "free" knit and crochet. I love your can-do-spirit, despite all the hurdles. 👏🏻Bravo You!!👏🏻 ☺️👋🏻🇳🇱
This is shown way too fast I couldn't keep up.
